John 10

Proverbs 8

Proverbs 8 is all about wisdom and especially the value of true godly wisdom. What you will notice is that the whole passage is wisdom speaking. Wisdom is personified. But what you mustn’t miss that it isn’t just a figure of speech, it is actually a person.

“I was appointed from eternity” (vs 23); “When there were no oceans I was given birth” (vs 24); “I was there when he set the heavens in place” (vs 27), “Then I was a craftsman at his side” (vs 30). All these point to the person of Jesus Christ. John 1:1-2 says “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.”

Where is true wisdom found? It is found in the person of Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:24 describes Jesus as the “wisdom of God”.  Read Proverbs 8 with the view that this is Christ speaking and you will see a different perspective.

You will see that Christ is calling out to each of us. That He is seeking us out (vs 1-4). That He is speaking to us (vs 6-10) and that His words speak the truth and instruct us. If we are discerning and follow His words it shows we have true wisdom.

All this shows us that true wisdom is only found in knowing and having a relationship with Christ.  It comes through the gospel.  It is not about your intellectual ability. It is about your personal relationship with Christ.  Are we really listening to Christ?  Are we really following his instructions?  How can we make our relationship with Christ more personal?
