Acts 24
Proverbs 15

33 Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the Lord,
    and humility comes before honor.

Proverbs 15:33

The New Testament repeats this theme and asks, “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom” (James 3:13).

Do you know someone who “fears the Lord?” Do you know someone who is truly humble before God? Is it you? Are you wise? Do you do what is right to honour God?

True wisdom is expressed in fearing and obeying God. This attitude of submission is the path to blessing and eternal life. Pride inevitably leads to destruction and loss. Proverbs 18:22 says, “Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honour.” Jesus says it like this, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3).

What does true wisdom look like in practice you ask? It is recognising your need of Christ and coming to Him for salvation (Matthew 11:28).It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.” (1 Corinthians 1:30)

What simple attitude reveals that you fear God? Brokenness over your sin or as Jesus puts it, “being poor in spirit” (Matthew 5:3).  Jesus explains the consequence of this attitude by saying that if you are resolutely dependent on Him for forgiveness and righteousness you are “blessed” and a citizen of the “kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3-5) Jesus said, “My Father will honour the one who serves me.” (John 12:26)

This is the honour that comes from humility; when Christ acknowledges your name before His Father in heaven because you trust and proclaim Him. (Matthew 10:32) Have you ever asked God to help you be wise enough to follow Christ and humble enough to obey Him? Don’t hesitate to pray.
